The transfer didn't go through: what it means and what to do

M
Written by Mario Barban

Sometimes a transfer doesn't arrive at its destination. Your transactions will tell you with two different labels — here's how to read them.

"Not executed"

The transfer never actually left. Typical causes:

  • Non-existent or incorrectly written IBAN

  • Beneficiary's account closed or not accepting incoming payments

  • Insufficient funds at the time of execution

In this case you haven't lost anything: the amount isn't debited (or it's reversed right away). Fix the details and try again.

"Returned" / "Sent back"

The transfer did leave, but the beneficiary's bank sent it back (for example, if the account was closed in the meantime). You'll see two linked transactions: the original outgoing payment and the returned amount.

How to avoid most problems

  • Copy-paste the IBAN instead of typing it out by hand.

  • Take the name check warning seriously before sending: if the name and IBAN don't match, double-check with the beneficiary by phone.

If the reason shown in the details isn't clear to you, just write to us with the date and amount: we'll explain it in plain, human language.
